SPECIAL EVENTS

Smith Point Sea Rescue’s 28th Annual Fishing Derby.

Fishing days are June 10th and 11th with final registration at Buzzards Point Marina from noon till  8PM on June 9th . Everything is in place for a wonderful weekend for the entire family with fishing, dancing, crafts and food according to Russ Bertino, Tournament Director. And back by popular demand will be a fish fry both Friday and Saturday from noon to 9 PM.

Bertino also announced that acountry DJ will be entertaining Friday night June 10th from 8PM till midnight and Casper will be playing Saturday night from 8PM to midnight.  The entertainment along with various food and craft vendors all take place at Buzzards Point Marina in Reedville.

This will be the 28th year for the grandfather of Bay tournaments and will be held on June 10th and 11th at Buzzards Point Marina in Reedville, Virginia. This event, hosted by Buzzard’s Point Marina in Reedville, has been a tradition on the Northern Neck since it’s inception.  The Derby pays out over $30,000.00 in cash prizes for catching three species of fish local to the area, namely, striped bass, bluefish and croaker.  This year additional skill categories add additional possibilities for fisherman to win cash awards.  There are also prize categories for both female and youth anglers as well.

Sunnybank Ferry The Sunnybank Ferry is free and it can carry up to two vehicles. It connects Rt. 644 from Sunnybank to Ophelia, M-F 8am-4:30pm. Saturday 8-12:00 Noon. Note: Closed daily 12:00 Noon to 12:30 for Lunch and Sundays. The Ferry may also be closed at short notice for adverse tide or weather conditions.

Bush Mill Stream Natural Area Preserve.  Forest walks, bird watching and wildlife.  4 miles from Heathsville to Rt. 201, keep straight on Rt. 642 for a half mile, turn left at the sign.  For info, call Belle Isle Park, 462-5030.

  • Coan Hall, site of the plantation of John Mottrom, Northumberland's first settler, c. 1640, on Rt. 630 near Claraville.  Victorian cottage (privately owned) dates to c. 1870.
  • Cobb's Hall Burying Ground on Rt. 669 near Ditchley, 1664 grave of Richard Lee..
  • Cypress Farm off Rt. 624 near Lewisetta, one of the area's older cemeteries, dating to the early 1800's.
  • Ditchley: National Landmark Georgia house, c. 1752, on Rt. 725, (privately owned).
